NOVEMBER 2020 (SEED)
Moss is an environmental fintech operating in the carbon credit market. The company’s platform (moss.earth) allows both individuals and corporations to buy carbon credit tokens to compensate their carbon footprint. These tokens, referred to as MCO2 tokens, are unique to Moss, created using blockchain technology and backed by carbon credits.
Carbon credits are digital certificates that prove that a company or an environmental project prevented the pollution of one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent (“CO2eq”, a unit equal to the global warming impact of one tonne of greenhouse gases).
PROTECTING THE AMAZON
Moss buys certified carbon credits from projects in the Amazon (e.g. Agrocortex2 and Fortaleza Ituxi Redd+) and creates a digital token using blockchain technology for every carbon credit. In turn, the purchase of MCO2 tokens finances certified projects for preservation and reforestation in the Amazon.
"MOSS PROGRAMS CARBON CREDITS INTO BLOCKCHAIN TO IMPROVE THEIR TRANSFERABILITY, TRACEABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY."
THE DEAL
THE CRAFTORY LED THE $4M SEED ROUND ALONGSIDE OTHER INVESTORS.
Moss intends to use the funds to support their global expansion in 2021.
WHY BLOCKCHAIN
Moss programs carbon credits into blockchain to improve their transferability, traceability and transparency.
Blockchain is a distributed ledger technology (DLT) that allows information to be stored globally on thousands of servers. This means that information can be accessed and verified by anyone in the blockchain network, allowing consumers and businesses to verify the validity of the carbon credit tokens they purchase – and avoiding the exchange of credits that have already been consumed.
